What does RPM do?

• Builds a single RPM formatted file (package) for easier software distribution.

• Installs, upgrades, verifies, and cleanly uninstalls software packaged in the RPM format.

• RPM creates and manages a database that tracks:

  • which packages are installed and their version
  • which packages depend upon one another
  • which files are contained within a given package
